Two cases of lateral UKA

Lateral replacement is relatively rare in unicompartmental replacement, and due to the functional anatomic characteristics difference, the lateral replacement is more challenging than the medial replacement, therefore requires more surgical skill from the surgeon.

For lateral lesions, the mobile platform UKA prosthesis can not provide long-term stability, not least because it has a much higher rate of dislocation than medial UKA, whereas the fixed platform unicondylar prosthesis is the preferred prosthesis for lateral unicondylar replacements due to its design characteristics, which do not suffer from dislocation.

Recently, Dr. Sun Kuo and Dr. Huang Wenzhou from the Department of Orthopaedics of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University shared two cases of lateral unicompartmental knee replacements performed with the LDK XU fixed platform unicondylar prosthesis, which resulted in significant improvement in the patient’s symptoms.

Case 1

Description

Complaint: Pain and discomfort in the left knee joint for more than 30 years, aggravated for recent 1 month.

Clinical diagnosis: primary osteoarthritis of the left knee.
